Skellig Islands – these are two small islands Great Skellig (also known as Skellig Michael) and Little Skellig on the southwest coast of County Kerry.
Little Skellig – is a reserve of 25,000 pairs of white gannets and for this reason it is not possible to explore this island.
Great Skellig – is on the UNESCO World Heritage list due to the ruins of the early medieval Abbey of St. Fionana from the second half of the sixth century,
In the twelfth century, the clergy left the island, which for two centuries became the goal of pilgrimages. In 1862, two lighthouses were built on the island, one of which works to this day. There are characteristic stone huts in the shape of hives. If you want to get from the marina to the monastery, you have to climb 500 really steep stairs (definitely not for people with fear of heights).
The Star Wars Force Awakens was recorded on this Island.
We got to the island from Portmagee, but you can also choose from Knightstown, Ballinskelligs and Caherdaniel but they are around 50 Euros per person. Cruises are unfortunately dependent on the weather, sightseeing is possible from mid-May to the end of September.
